Design and Implementation of Energy Storage Battery Management System Integrated with Solar Inverter in Microgrid

Modern microgrid systems require sophisticated energy management solutions to handle the intermittent nature of renewable sources like solar power. This paper presents a solar inverter-compatible battery management system (BMS) using TMS320F2812 DSP and LTC6811 monitoring IC, achieving ±5 mV voltage accuracy and ±1°C temperature precision through innovative circuit design.

1. System Architecture

The proposed BMS architecture integrates seamlessly with solar inverters through three key subsystems:

Subsystem Components Function
Master Control TMS320F2812 DSP UKF-based SOC estimation, CAN communication
Slave Monitoring LTC6811-1 ICs 12-cell voltage/temperature sampling
Power Interface Buck-Boost converters 15-62V to 3.3V/5V/12V conversion

The state-space model for battery dynamics considers solar inverter interaction:

$$
\begin{cases}
x_k = f(x_{k-1}, u_{k-1}) + w_{k-1} \\
y_k = h(x_k) + v_k
\end{cases}
$$

Where $x_k$ represents SOC, $u_k$ denotes charge/discharge current from solar inverter, and $w_k$, $v_k$ are process/measurement noise.

2. Precision Measurement Circuits

The solar inverter-compatible measurement system achieves:

Parameter Range Resolution Accuracy
Voltage 0-5V 1.5mV ±5mV
Temperature -40°C-85°C 0.1°C ±1°C
Current ±200A 10mA ±0.5%

Voltage measurement utilizes LTC6811’s differential inputs with RC filtering:

$$
V_{cell} = \frac{R_{filter}}{R_{filter} + R_{leakage}} \times V_{actual}
$$

Where $R_{filter}$ = 100Ω, $R_{leakage}$ > 1MΩ ensures <0.1% measurement deviation.

3. Active Balancing Algorithm

The solar inverter-coupled balancing system employs SOC-based charge redistribution:

$$
\Delta Q = \sum_{i=1}^{N} (SOC_i – \overline{SOC}) \times C_{nom}
$$

Where $C_{nom}$ = 100Ah battery capacity. The balancing current for Buck-Boost converter:

$$
I_{bal} = \frac{\eta \cdot V_{high} \cdot D}{V_{low} \cdot (1-D)}
$$

Where η=92% (converter efficiency), D=duty cycle (0-100%).

4. Experimental Validation

Testing with 12S LiFePO4 battery bank connected to 5kW solar inverter showed:

Condition Voltage Deviation Temporal Drift Balancing Efficiency
Initial 68mV 0.5mV/hr N/A
Passive 32mV 1.2mV/hr 48%
Active 9mV 0.3mV/hr 89%

The UKF SOC estimation demonstrated superior performance compared to conventional methods:

$$
RMSE_{UKF} = \sqrt{\frac{1}{N}\sum_{k=1}^{N}(SOC_{true} – SOC_{est})^2} = 0.8\%
$$

vs. 2.1% for EKF and 3.7% for Coulomb counting under solar inverter load fluctuations.

5. Solar Inverter Integration

Key communication parameters with solar inverter:

Interface Protocol Rate Data Frame
CAN SAE J1939 500kbps SOC/SOH/Power Limits
RS485 Modbus RTU 115200bps Cell Voltages/Temperatures

Power sharing algorithm between solar inverter and battery:

$$
P_{bat} = \begin{cases}
P_{load} – P_{PV} & SOC > 20\% \\
min(P_{PV}, 0.2C) & SOC \leq 20\%
\end{cases}
$$

Where $P_{PV}$ = solar inverter output, $P_{load}$ = microgrid demand.

6. Thermal Management

The solar inverter-synced thermal model prevents battery overheating:

$$
\frac{dT}{dt} = \frac{I^2R_{int} – hA(T – T_{amb})}{mC_p}
$$

Where:
$R_{int}$ = 0.25mΩ (cell internal resistance)
$h$ = 25W/m²K (convection coefficient)
$A$ = 0.12m² (surface area)
$C_p$ = 900J/kgK (heat capacity)

Implementation results showed maximum temperature gradient <2°C between cells during 1C solar inverter charging.
